Why a photograph beats a sitting

No animal has ever held a pose for an artist. That is the honest reason pet portraits are made from photographs: the moment you already captured is more characteristic than anything that could be staged. The tilt of the head, the one ear that never sits flat, the particular way they look at you — that is what we work from.

What we keep

Markings, coat colour and pattern, eye colour, and the shape of the face are treated as fixed. A pet portrait fails the moment the owner says “that is not quite him”, and almost always it is a marking in the wrong place or a muzzle that has been tidied up. We do not tidy.

Choosing a style for an animal

Watercolour suits soft or long coats and light-coloured animals. Charcoal is striking on black dogs and cats, where photographs usually lose all the detail. Pencil holds fine fur and whiskers best. Cartoon is the one people choose for a pet with a big personality, and it is the most forgiving of an imperfect photograph.

The photograph to send

Eye level, in daylight, filling most of the frame. Crouch down rather than shooting from above — a photograph taken from standing height turns any animal into a snout. If their eyes are sharp and you can see the fur texture, it will work.

Common questions

How is my portrait made?

Your portrait is generated with AI image tools under human artistic direction, then checked by a person for likeness before it reaches you. It is not drawn by hand by a human artist, and we do not describe it as handmade.

When do I pay?

Nothing is charged when you place your request. We make your portrait, email you a proof, and only ask for payment once you have seen it and approved it.

What do I receive?

A high-resolution digital file by email, ready to print or frame. Nothing physical is shipped, so there is no waiting on post and no delivery address to give.

What happens to my photograph?

It is stored privately while your portrait is made, and deleted once your artwork has been delivered. It is never published, shared, sold, or used to train any model.

Can you do more than one pet in the same portrait?

Yes. Send a photograph with both in it, or tell us and we will work from two photographs and compose them together.

My dog is black and the photo looks flat. Will that work?

Charcoal and pencil are the right answer for a black coat. They rebuild the form with tone rather than relying on the photograph to have captured it.

Can you do a memorial portrait of a pet who has died?

Yes, and we treat those carefully. Any clear photograph will do, even an older or lower-quality one — tell us when you order and we will take extra care.

Your dog does not need to sit still

One good photograph is the whole brief. We will send you a proof before anything is charged.
